What is Army ROTC?

Army ROTC is a program of leadership and military skills training. It prepares Penn State students for officer responsibilities in the active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard following graduation or after deferment to attend advanced civilian schooling. 

Scholarships and Tuition Assistance

2-to-3.5-year scholarships available.​

Nursing and STEM students who pursue a four-year degree can apply for scholarships set aside for nursing and STEM students only.​

For individuals not interested in Active Duty, The Army Reserves and Army National Guard offer Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty scholarships and Tuition Assistance programs.

Army scholarships cover:​

FULL tuition and mandatory fees (Activity fee, Computer lab fee, etc.).​

$1200 for books annually. ​

Monthly stipend (up to 10 months per year): $420 per Month

Military Service Obligation

If you are selected for a ROTC Scholarship, you are required to:

  • Sign a contract with the Secretary of the Army.
  • Attend Cadet Summer Training (CST).
  • Accept a Commission to serve in the Army on Active Duty, in the Army National Guard, or in the Army Reserves upon degree completion.
  • Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by one of the following:

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to go to basic training?

Army Basic Combat Training is not required for individuals participating in Army ROTC. The Army ROTC Curriculum covers the same material and more throughout your time in the program.

Who enrolls in ROTC?

Individuals who have an interest in the military but are not ready to make an immediate commitment.

Students who want hands-on leadership training.

Are my ROTC classes for credit?

Each course is three credits during the freshman and sophomore years.

At least six credits of Army ROTC can be applied toward degree requirements in all majors, usually as elective credits.

Does joining Army ROTC give me a service obligation?

You can take up to two years of Army ROTC with NO obligation to serve!
