Can I go into the Army Reserve or National Guard after graduation instead of the regular Army?
Yes. Selected Cadets may choose to serve part-time in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard while pursuing a civilian career.
If you receive a national guard/reserves scholarship you are obligated to serve 8 years in the national guard or reserves. If you contract non scholarship in the national guard/ reserves you are obligated to serve 6 years in the national guard/ reserves and then 2 years in IRR (individual ready reserves). Members of the IRR are trained Soldiers who may be called upon, if needed, to replace Soldiers in active duty and Army Reserve units. Scholarship winners must serve for four years along with 4 years in IRR. Non-scholarship Cadets who enroll in the ROTC Advanced Course must serve for three years and 5 years IRR. How many years you receive a scholarship for (i.e. 2, 3, 4 year winner) does not affect how many years you serve either. All contacts in total are 8 year commitments. All who graduate and complete ROTC training are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army.
